Three Positive Takeaways from Recent Accounting Practice Sales

Introduction

Selling an accounting practice is rarely straightforward — but the right approach and mindset can make all the difference. Over the last six months, we’ve been involved in some great outcomes that came with a few challenges along the way.

Here are three real-world insights worth sharing.

1. Buyers Can Overcome Past Bad Experiences — With the Right Support

We recently worked with a Buyer who had a difficult experience in a previous purchase. Understandably, they approached this next opportunity with caution.

What made the difference? Clear and consistent communication. By addressing their concerns early, keeping information transparent & holding multiple face-to-face meetings, trust was rebuilt — and the transaction moved forward smoothly.

Lesson: When doubt exists, communication isn’t just helpful, it’s essential.

2. Honesty Really Is the Best Policy

In another case, the Vendor had some staff changes just before settlement — the kind of detail that can make any Buyer nervous. Technically, the Seller wasn’t required to share it, but they did.

That honesty didn’t derail the deal; it did the opposite. By addressing the issue upfront, it built confidence rather than creating suspicion, and both sides worked together to find a practical solution.

Lesson: The short-term instinct to hold back can create long-term issues. Transparency wins.

3. When One Door Closes, It Helps to Have Another

We recently spoke with a Vendor who had been negotiating directly with a Buyer for nearly a year. Everything seemed on track — until the Buyer suddenly changed direction. This is a common risk when selling an accounting practice without a structured process or multiple Buyers in play.

In the blink of an eye, a year of time and effort went out the window. Unfortunately, without other options in play, the Vendor had to start again from scratch.

Lesson: If you’re speaking to a Buyer directly, circumstances can shift quickly. Having multiple interested parties isn’t just a strategy — it’s protection.
